SACRAMENTOAssemblywoman Lois Wolk (D-Davis) was honored today for protecting California’s air, water, and open space. Environment California presented Wolk with its 2006 Environmental Champion award for her perfect score on the group’s legislative report card grading legislators on their votes last session on 17 key environmental bills. “Scorecards enable California voters to learn more about their elected official’s voting records, giving them the information needed to praise or criticize their actions from the previous year,” said Dan Jacobson, legislative director for the statewide environmental advocacy group. “Assemblywoman Wolk scored 100 percent for consistently putting the quality of California’s environment ahead of powerful interests.” The group graded legislators’ voting records on bills including Assembly Bill 32 (Nunez/Pavley), The Global Warming Solutions Act of 2006, which creates the first ever statewide cap on global warming pollution, and Senate Bill 1 (Murray), which put California on a track toward building a million solar roofs in the next ten years. “I’m proud to have earned this 100 percent, as I was proud to coauthor both AB 32 and SB 1,” said Wolk. “AB 32 is projected to reduce California’s greenhouse gas emissions by 25 percent over the next two decade. SB 1 sets the goal of building half of all new homes with solar panels over the next ten years. These bills encourage Californians to use sustainable clean energy and reduce our consumption of natural gas and fossil fuels, which will improve air quality in the Central Valley and throughout the state. That’s something all Californians can all appreciate. ” The group’s 2006 legislative scorecard was posted today on its website, www.environmentcalifornia.org
