Wolk exhibits local artist' s work at Capitol

Paintings by Davis artist Phil Gross depict local landscapes

SACRAMENTO– Assemblywoman Lois Wolk (D-Davis) is proud to announce that she is displaying four paintings by Davis artist Phil Gross at her office in the State Capitol.

Gross, an artist of 25 years, is known for his vibrant depictions of rural landscapes, backcountry roads, water towers—even the random cow. His art has been displayed in galleries throughout California .

“I’m honored to display Phil’s work,” said Wolk. “His paintings are windows into the Eighth Assembly District . They capture beauty in the familiar.”

“The landscapes that I choose to paint are tied by a common thread, a sense of nostalgia, a setting that at once is current but also harkens to a valley terrain that we have known for many years,” said Gross. “We carry these landscapes of our region within us, they are part of our sense of homeland and they can evoke a spiritual calm that we long for in our frenetic urban lives. I try to develop a composition so that viewers of my painting might think that they are just one step away from walking into the painting itself, suddenly surrounded by the fields, canals, and heat of a hot summer day.”

“His paintings are snapshots of our everyday world,” said Wolk. “I look forward to sharing them with my visitors at the Capitol.”

Four of Gross’ paintings are currently on display in Wolk’s office, room 3120 at the State Capitol. Gross also has displays at Elliot Fouts Gallery in Sacramento and the Artery in Davis , and will open a solo exhibition at the John Natsoulas Gallery in Davis on April 7.
