CBS (San Francisco) Regional: Legislature Passes Caregiver Registry Bill |

09/11/07 2:30 PDT The State Legislature has passed a bill that creates a registry to track abusive caregivers. AB 1192, authored by Assemblywoman Noreen Evans, D-Santa Rosa, passed the Assembly 69-0 and the Senate 33-0. It now goes to the governor for his signature or veto. Evans said registries have worked protect society from criminals and her bill targets "the worst of all bullies who prey on the vulnerable of our society. "Developmentally disabled people often cannot fight back against their abusers. We need to protect them." Evans said in a written statement. The bill directs the Secretary of Health and Human Services to establish a registry of care providers with a history of abuse. Evans said it will prevent abusive caregivers from moving around the state to continue their violence and abuse. |
