The Future is in Your Hands

This year, California voters have given themselves a big new job – and the state is looking for the right people to do it.  It is an opportunity that has never before been available and will happen only once every ten years.

Under Proposition 11 – the Voters FIRST Act – the once-a-decade job of drawing new districts for the state Senate, Assembly, and Board of Equalization will go to 14 voters chosen to serve on California’s first Citizens Redistricting Commission.   Why not you?

The Commission empowers real people to make this crucial decision.  The lines will help determine who represents you in government and who else shares that representation.  It will impact every policy issues at the state level.  Plain and simply, we need your help.

The Commission will be made up of five Democrats, five Republicans, and four members from neither party – so every view will have a voice.

Registered voters are eligible to serve on the commission if they have been continuously registered in California with the same political party, or with no political party, for the five years immediately prior to being appointed to the Commission; and they have voted in at least two of the last three statewide general elections.  A voter may not serve on the Commission if the voter or a member of his or her immediate family has been appointed to, elected to, or been a candidate for a California congressional or state office; served as an officer, employee, or paid consultant of a California political party or of the campaign committee of a candidate for California congressional or elective state office; or has been a registered lobbyist.

It’s easy to apply. My office can provide you with more information, or go to www.WeDrawtheLines.ca.gov for details and more information. Applications will be accepted online through February 12, 2010.  Apply today!
