Light Brown Apple Moth (LBAM): Aerial Spraying Cancelled, Huffman bill (AB 2765) Moves to Senate Floor

In a major victory for residents of the Bay Area, the California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA) announced on Thursday, June 19 that plans to spray aerial pesticides in urban areas to control the light brown apple moth (LBAM) have been scrapped.

CDFA will instead use sterile moths as a primary way to eradicate the pest in urban areas. The announcement comes after months of legislative and grassroots efforts to stop the proposed spraying in the parts of Marin County and the Bay Area. Assemblymember Huffman, who chairs the Environmental Safety and Toxic Materials Committee, convened the first legislative hearing on the LBAM issue on February 14th of this year. He also introduced AB 2765 to provide safeguards against aerial pesticide spraying. Huffman's bill passed its last Senate policy committee last week and now moves to the Senate Appropriations Committee.

Huffman Bills Advance through the Senate

Most of the 21 Huffman bills passed out of the Assembly have now cleared policy committees in the Senate and several have already reached the Senate floor.

Keeping Kids Safe - Prevent Needless Injuries and Deaths

Every year, thousands of children are hurt or die because a driver backing up didn't see them. These incidents for the most part take place in residential driveways or parking lots.

Most of us do this every single day - get in the car, check the mirrors and look behind you before putting the car in reverse. Blind spots, though, can turn this simple act into a tragedy. One simple rule to follow is to always 'assume' a child is behind or in front of your car every time you move it. Please click here for tips on how to prevent a needless tragedy. These precautions can save lives. You can also visit www.KidsAndCars.org for more information and resources on preventing children from being injured or killed in non-traffic, motor vehicle related events.

Huffman Presents Sustainable North Bay Award to MacArthur Place

On June 19, Assemblymember Huffman recognized MacArthur Place with his monthly Sustainable North Bay award.

Huffman toured the facility with General Manager Bill Blum, Sustainability Programs Coordinator Stacey Ward, and Director of Operations Kevin Virgo.

Huffman Legislation Encourages Resolution for Preservation of Coastal Commission Whale Tail Plate

Assemblymember Huffman introduced AB 1338 to allow the California Coastal Commission to protect its Whale Tail environmental license plate.

The Commission, in order to avoid losing a significant portion of funds for some of the state's environmental programs, needed to replace the current whale tail art on the license plate with new marine art. Revenues from the famous 'whale tail' license plate support coastal environmental education, beach cleanups, restoration projects, and other projects to preserve and enhance environmental resources. AB 1338 was intended to be a statutory fix to allow the Commission to use new art, but instead it successfully encouraged the DMV and the Commission to find an administrative solution. The DMV agreed to find a new artist to create a new whale tail design and Assemblymember Huffman withdrew his proposed legislation.
