Conference Committee Continues Work on Quick AND Responsible Budget Actions
FIGHTING FOR OUR FAMILIES - In this Assembly Web Report we hear from ordinary, hard-working Californians, "Real People," who discuss the life-threatening situations that would occur if state-funded safety net programs are eliminated, as the Governor has proposed. A 24 year old woman born HIV positive says the Governor's proposal will cut her off from lifesaving anti-viral drugs. A working mother describes the ordeal of what would happen if her family's health coverage and basic services are eliminated; a young single mother who receives Cal-Works pleads that the state not eliminate the program that allows her to work and take care of her family. These individuals are representative of hundreds of thousands of Californians who play by the rules, work hard and will potentially lose everything if California's safety net is destroyed.
Stimulus Money for Water Projects and Environmental Safety
(Sacramento) – With millions of dollars in federal stimulus package funding earmarked for water and environmental safety projects now available, two California State Assembly Committees met this week to establish state priorities for the federal stimulus package dollars. Assemblymember Jared Huffman (D-San Rafael), chair of the Water, Parks & Wildlife Committee, says the state can definitely use federal funds for a number of priorities—including upgrading water and sewage treatment systems to eliminate spills into bays and waterways and addressing the needs of the Delta. Huffman’s committee and the Environmental Safety & Toxic Materials Committee, chaired by Assemblymember Wesley Chesbro (D-Arcata), heard from several experts on flood protection, water management, water quality, and fish and wildlife resources. Here’s more in this Assembly Web Report.
