Assemblymember Patty Berg Spends Time In West Sonoma County

Berg participates in the Apple Blossom Parade and Visits Volunteers working on Earth Day Project

Sonoma County - Assemblymember Patty Berg was in the district this past weekend for the Apple Blossom parade and an Earth Day celebration. She rode atop the back seat of a red convertible and greeted the many constituents who came out on a beautiful April afternoon to enjoy the Apple Blossom parade. From there, she went to talk with volunteers at Armstrong Redwoods State Park who were working on a project designed to save the Colonel Armstrong Tree from visitors attempting to get close to it.

The platform being erected will allow visitors to get closer to the tree without compacting the soil, which is harmful to the tree, and its root system. The Colonel Armstrong Redwood Tree currently has a wooden fence around it but that wasn’t enough to stop visitors from jumping it to have their picture taken with the famous tree. Rick Royer, with California State Parks said, “It’s the best thing we could think of to protect the roots of this important landmark.” He added, “We’re also so pleased that Assemblymember Berg cares enough about our State Parks to take time out of her busy schedule to come out and talk to the volunteers working on this important project.”

Berg said, “I just love being in the district. It’s so important to me to stay in touch with the great work people are doing to protect our natural resources and build a strong community.”

Berg serves the 1st Assembly District that stretches from Sonoma County north to the Oregon border and takes in Trinity County as well. It is one of the largest districts in the nation. Berg juggles a schedule that includes legislative sessions in Sacramento as well as visiting the various parts of the district at least once a month.
