State Wildlife Board Funds Humboldt Project

Jacoby Creek Receives Over $1 Million for Expansion Project

Sacramento - Assemblymember Patty Berg (D-Eureka) announced today the approval of $1,130,000 for the acquisition of 20-acres to protect old growth forests and create a riparian reserve area adjacent to the Jacoby Creek corridor.

Berg said, "The State Wildlife Conservation Board approved the funds today for this wonderful project. It will help protect listed and sensitive species. As Chair of the Joint committee on Fisheries and Aquaculture, I’m also pleased that salmon steelhead will benefit." Assemblymember Berg is a Legislative Advisory member to the Wildlife Conservation Board.

Also supporting the efforts of today's land acquisition was Senator Wesley Chesbro (D-Arcata). "This is a great project that the people of Humboldt County have been developing for several years,” Chesbro said. “We have made great progress in protecting the lands along Jacoby Creek with the long-term strategy to restore the Humboldt Bay wetlands. The Jacoby Creek Land Trust has been a great leader in this effort,” he added.

According to the Jacoby Creek Land Trust, the funds will be used to purchase 20-acres of private land for the protection of the habitat along Jacoby Creek, its tributaries, and mature second growth Redwood forests southeast of Arcata.

"We are making real progress to protect the assets that make Humboldt County such a unique and beautiful place to live,” Chesbro said. “I am pleased to be able to be a part of this important project."

Funds to acquire the Jacoby Creek property will come from Proposition 50; the voter-approved bond called the Water, Security, Clean Drinking Water, Coastal and Beach Protection Fund of 2002.
