Berg Announces Wildlife Conservation Board Acquisitions

SACRAMENTO – Assemblymember Patty Berg (D - Eureka) announced that the Wildlife Conservation Board (WCB) has granted $3,720,270 to 1st Assembly District projects in voter approved bond funds.

At its regularly scheduled meeting today, the WCB approved a $222,000 grant to the Save-The-Redwoods League for a cooperative project with the Bureau of Land Management and the Resources Legacy Fund to assist the Redwoods League with the acquisition of 965+ acres of old growth redwood timber. The land is located in southern Humboldt County, approximately 14 miles northeast of Garberville.

The WCB also approved $500,270 for a cooperative project with the City of Eureka and the Coastal Conservancy to improve public fishing access on Humboldt Bay at the foot of C Street on city property. The project will include a multi-use dock (420’ by 40’) to be used for both recreational and commercial fishing activities.

In addition, $3,000,000 was granted to acquire approximately 387 acres of privately owned land for the preservation of a wildlife habitat. This acquisition includes several tax-default parcels in a Chapter 8 sale, located in the Pacific Shores Subdivision on the north shore of Lake Earl, approximately seven miles north of Crescent City. These parcels are being acquired from willing sellers.

“This is good news for the people who have worked especially hard to promote these projects," Berg said.

Assemblymember Berg is a member of the Joint Legislative Advisory Committee of the Wildlife Conservation Board.
