Three Ukiah Heroes to be Honored in Sacramento

Assemblymember Patty Berg to recognize 3 Ukiahians at the Capitol

Sacramento – Cadet Julian Covella, Sgt. Marcus Young and Security Guard Brett Schott will be singled out and honored on the floor of the legislature for their heroism and bravery demonstrated when they became the unwitting subjects of a violent encounter in Ukiah’s Wal-Mart parking lot last March.

Young was shot several times and Schott was stabbed when seventeen-year-old Julian Covella had the presence of mind to help the injured Young unholster his gun so that he could fend off the attacker. The three men all showed a great deal of composure as well as concern for one another as they dealt with this potentially lethal situation when a routine stop erupted into gunfire. Both Young and Schott are recovering from their injuries.

Berg said, “When I first heard this story I knew I had to do something to honor these brave young men. What an incredible tale of honor, courage and clear thinking in the face of grave danger. Our community is fortunate indeed to have these men among us.”

A brief ceremony will take place prior to the start of the legislative session on Monday, May 12th, when Assemblymember Berg will present each hero with a resolution commemorating the day these men rose to the challenge and performed their jobs with courage and selflessness that may have saved, at least, their own lives and possibly the lives of others as well.

Berg continued, “It’s frightening to think of what could have happened without the sound judgement and fast action shown by these three men. They represent the best in our community and I’m privileged to have the opportunity to honor them.”
