Bills honor Mendocino County pioneer woman and Del Norte slain CHP officer.
SACRAMENTO—The Senate Transportation Committee today passed two bills by Assemblywoman Patty Berg that would honor a Mendocino County pioneer woman and a slain CHP officer.
ACR 30 would name the northern span of the Eel River Bridge on Highway 101 the Elizabeth Jane Rosewarne Memorial Bridge, after the pioneer woman who resettled there after leaving San Francisco in 1897. The Rosewarne family settled on a 160-acre parcel across from Confusion Hill. After her husband’s death, Elizabeth Rosewarne opened a Texaco Star gas station and country store to support herself and her children. The Rosewarne homestead is an archaeological site and is eligible for the National Register of Historic Places.
“Jane Rosewarne’s pioneer experience is part of Mendocino County’s history,” said Berg, D-Eureka. “Honoring women and their contributions to California history is important to California’s next generation.”
ACR 31 would designate a portion of Highway 101 between the E.M. Fine Memorial Bridge and Oregon State line in Del Norte County as the California Highway Patrol Officer Ernest R. Felio Memorial Highway. A Navy veteran of the Korean War, Felio joined the CHP in 1962. Felio was awarded the Medal of Valor by the State of California for his bravery in saving a man who was nearly electrocuted during a traffic collision. Officer Felio was shot and killed during the course of routine traffic stop.
“Felio’s bravery will always be remembered through this memorial,” said Assemblywoman Berg. “He lived an exemplary life worthy of this honor.”
Both bills now go to the Senate Appropriations Committee.# # #
