Assemblymember Patty Berg recently named Dr. Casey Crabill the Woman of the Year for the 1st Assembly District.

Crabill, who will be honored on the floor of the state Assembly during the 20th Annual Woman of the Year ceremony Monday, became the first woman to serve as president/superintendent of College of the Redwoods on July 1, 1999.

During her tenure, Crabill successfully campaigned for a $40.3 million bond measure that allowed the college to modernize its campuses in Fort Bragg, Eureka and Crescent City, and obtained $1.6 million in federal grant funds to create an Office of Institutional Research. She also established a Tourism and Hospitality Program.

Crabill has established two early college high school programs: the Academy of the Redwoods in Eureka, and the Klamath River campus in Klamath. Thanks to a grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, students earn college credits while earning a high school diploma.

“I am thrilled to have Casey as my honoree this year,” Berg said. “She has made such a positive difference that she simply must be acknowledged, commended and celebrated.”

Crabill also serves on the Humboldt Area Foundation, Redwood Community Action Agency, KEET-TV, and the Humboldt County Workforce Investment Board.

“I am very honored by this award,” Crabill said. “I work all the time with people who should also be recognized for pursuing their education and working hard to raise the standard of living for themselves and their children. A strong community connection is the thing that makes the college strong and helps our community to move forward.”

For the past 20 years, the California Legislative Women’s Caucus has sponsored a Woman of the Year celebration, which this year will be held at the Capitol on Monday. As part of the celebration, each assemblymember selects one woman from their district who has significantly contributed to her community.
