A bill naming a portion of the Ma-le’l Dunes the “Senator Wesley Chesbro Trail” awaits Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger’s approval. Penned by Assemblymember Patty Berg (D-Eureka), the bill on Wednesday passed the state Senate.
Among his many duties, Chesbro served as state senator for the North Coast from 1998 to 2006.
“Naming a part of the Ma-le’l Dunes after Wes Chesbro is a testament to his lifelong work on improving the environment,” Berg said in a news release.
The Ma-le’l Dunes are west of Arcata on the north spit of Humboldt Bay, and accessed by Young Lane in Manila. The 444 acres of dunes are part of a cooperative management area overseen by the Bureau of Land Management and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
The south end of the dunes is open to the public, but to explore the north end, visitors must go on a guided hike hosted by the Friends of the Dunes.
