Berg bill commemorates veterans

9/1/2007

The state Senate on Thursday passed a resolution by Assemblymember Patty Berg that designates a portion of U.S. Highway 101 as a veterans memorial.

ACR 57 would designate a stretch of Highway 101 in Humboldt County, from milepost 68.40 to milepost 71.10, as the Veterans’ Memorial Highway, according to a news release from Berg’s office. The memorial will honor all veterans who have served in the armed forces of the United States and in all wars past, present and future.

“Our veterans deserve this recognition,” Berg stated in the release. “They have sacrificed so much to keep our country safe and free.”

According to the California Department of Veterans Affairs, California has an estimated 2.2 million veterans, which amounts to about 9.2 percent of the 24 million veterans in the U.S. Humboldt County has about 12,616 veterans.

Humboldt County veterans and Supervisor Jimmy Smith worked to bring this resolution to the Assembly.
