Assemblymember Patty Berg has been appointed to the Select Committee on Ports.
“Ports are going to play a big part of our lives in the coming decades,” Berg (D-Eureka) stated in a news release. “They’ll have a role to play in national security, commerce expansion and global warming.”
Berg is one of nine members on the committee; it is chaired by Democratic Assemblymember Betty Karnette, whose Southern California district is home to the Los Angeles-Long Beach port complex.
“When state government talks about ports, they’re usually thinking about Long Beach,” Berg stated. “But by appointing me, I think ... Speaker (Fabian Nunez) is making it clear that we’re going to pay attention to all our ports.”
Select committees are usually created to give policy makers an opportunity to examine specific issues more thoroughly, the release explains. The Select Committee on Ports has focused on security and infrastructure needs for California’s ports, as well as the economic role they play. |
