SACRAMENTO -- Assembly Speaker Fabian Núñez this week appointed 1st District Assemblywoman Patty Berg, D-Eureka, to the Select Committee on Ports. “Ports are going to be a big part of our lives in the coming decades,” said Berg, D-Eureka. “They'll have a role to play in national security, commerce expansion and global warming.” Berg will be one of nine members on the select committee. The committee is chaired by Democratic Assemblywoman Betty Karnette, whose southern California district is home to the massive Los Angeles/Long Beach port complex. ”When state government talks about ports, they're usually thinking about Long Beach,” said Berg. “But by appointing me, I think the speaker is making it clear that we're going to pay attention to all our ports.” Select committees are typically created to give policymakers an opportunity to examine specific issues more thoroughly. The Select Committee on Ports has focused on security and infrastructure needs for California's ports, as well as the economic role they play. |
