What's Inside... Assemblyman Solorio's First Bill Package Good Deeds And Accomplishments Should Not Go Unnoticed District Office: Capitol Office: |
Welcome Message
Hello and welcome to the first edition of my E-newsletter. As you probably know, I was elected to the California State Assembly last November to represent the Sixty-Ninth Assembly District which includes the cities of Anaheim, Garden Grove and Santa Ana. I was sworn into office on December 4th along with the other 79 members of the California State Assembly. Prior to being elected to the California Assembly, I served on the Santa Ana City Council for 6 years. Upon being elected in November, I became the first Santa Ana City Councilman to be elected to higher office since former Mayor Jerry Patterson was elected to the U.S. Congress more than 30 years ago. I am the son and grandson of farm workers and grew up working in the fields and orchards of the Central Valley. My parents are humble people who taught me simple lessons: “Study hard. Work hard. Treat everyone equally. Take care of your family.” As your Assemblyman, I plan to stay true to these values as I write laws and engage in political debate in Sacramento. I hope you enjoy reading my E-Newsletter. Please do not hesitate to contact me at Assemblymember.solorio@assembly.ca.gov if you have any ideas on how I can be of assistance to you. Sincerely,
Assemblyman Solorio's First Bill Package Assemblyman Solorio is pursuing bills in the areas of education, public safety, school safety, transportation and good government. Teaching English: Ensuring that our school children learn English is critical to helping them succeed in school and in the workforce. Assemblyman Solorio has proposed a bill that establishes a pilot program authorizing school districts with more than 50% English learner students to participate in an Accelerated English Acquisition Program that provides for the development of a special curriculum and professional development component that focuses more time on teaching English. Stopping Gangs: As you know from recent media reports, gang violence and drug use is ongoing concern in Central Orange County. One major way of reducing gang activity is through the use of gang injunctions such as recent injunctions issued in Santa Ana and Anaheim. A bill introduced by Assemblyman Solorio, AB 104, will make a major difference in the fight against gangs by allowing city attorneys to access state and local criminal arrest databases to support their court petitions for gang injunctions. This law change will also allow them to more easily and cost-effectively pursue drug abatement orders. School Safety: Assemblyman Solorio is carrying a bill, sponsored by the California Federation of Teachers, that will improve school security by establishing a minimum ratio of one full-time qualified classified employee to 500 pupils at middle and comprehensive high schools in the state. Another bill, sponsored by the Peace Officers Research Association of California, would create criminal penalties for bringing a gun to school that expels nonmetallic BBs or pellets. More Money for City Streets: Many cities are in urgent need of more money to maintain their residential and arterial streets. Assemblyman Solorio has introduced AB 823 to encourage the County of Orange to share some of its surplus Gas Tax and Proposition 42 funds with cities throughout the county. Voter Intimidation Disclosure: In response to the recent 2006 voter intimidation case in Orange County, Assemblyman Solorio has introduced a bill that would require election officials to give potential candidates for elected office a copy of the provisions of law that prohibit voter intimidation and the penalties for violating those provisions of law.
Good Deeds And Accomplishments Should Not Go Unnoticed Businessman Art Birtcher is to be commended for helping secure the safe passage of a 16-ton religious altarpiece from Spain to the Mission Basilica in San Juan Capistrano. The altarpiece is due to arrive any week now. Art Birtcher is a parishioner and a benefactor of the 42-foot-tall altarpiece which was inspired by an altarpiece in the Serra Chapel that was made almost 400 years ago in Spain. Anaheim Mayor’s TechScholar Program: Anaheim Mayor Curt Pringle, the City of Anaheim, and EarthLink Inc. have developed the program to give college-bound high school students the opportunity to apply for a scholarship to receive a personal laptop computer, laptop bag and EarthLink Wi-Fi Internet access. The scholarship is open to eligible sophomores and juniors who reside within the city limits of Anaheim. Here are 5 quick tips for parents to help lay a foundation for success in their child’s education career. 1.) Read to your child. Studies show that reading to your child at a young age will facilitate their interest and success in reading. 2) Provide your child a study area. When parents are involved in their children’s education at home, they do better in school. And parents can play an important role by providing their child a place in their home to study and can also check their homework. 3) Healthy diet. A healthy and nutritious diet provides energy for your child throughout the day. A generous dose of fruits and vegetables with a serving of juice or water is recommended. Fast food contains energy absorbing agents and may lead to heart disease in their adult life. 4) Limit TV viewing on school nights. Encourage your child to play sports, read or start a hobby in their free time. An active and intellectually stimulating lifestyle will lead to a healthier and more fulfilling life. 5) Take an interest in your child’s hobbies. Taking an interest in your child’s hobbies will improve your child’s confidence and self esteem. Also, it is a good way to spend quality time with your child.
