Questions & Answers

1. What is the digital television transition?

At midnight on February 17, 2009, all full-power television stations in the United States will stop broadcasting in analog and switch to 100% digital broadcasting.

Digital broadcasting promises to provide a clearer picture and more programming options and will free up airwaves for use by emergency responders. Some viewers that do not have cable or satellite programming will be unable to get a television signal.

2. Do I need any special equipment to ensure that I continue to receive programming after the switch?

A converter box plugs into your TV and will keep it working after the switchover.

  • If your analog TV functions with rabbit ears or outside antenna ONLY, you will need a converter box.
  • If your analog TV is connected to cable, satellite or other pay service you do not need a converter box.
  • Additionally, many newer televisions made in the last few years are DTV ready, so consult your owner's manual to determine if your television is equipped to handle the change. If you plan to either sign up for cable/satellite service before the changeover or purchase a new TV, you do not need any new equipment.

3. I don't know if I can afford a converter box? Is there any way to help with the cost?

Yes, Congress created the TV Converter Box Coupon Program for households wishing to keep using their analog TV sets after February 17, 2009. The Program allows U.S. households to obtain up to two coupons, each worth $40, that can be applied toward the cost of eligible converter boxes.
