Commission on the 21st Century Economy
When you look at the scope of the national economic downturn, it’s clear we need a multifaceted approach to the problems facing California. A thorough, real and non partisan review of California’s economic structure is an important part of that.
That’s why even before I became Speaker I was proposing we review this 1930’s system so it would make more sense in the 21st Century. This bipartisan Commission on the 21st Century Economy will be developing important recommendations that can help provide long-term stability for the services Californians depend on, helping provide options to get vital programs like education, firefighting and children’s health care off the year-to-year budget roller coaster they’ve been stuck on.
I applaud the governor for agreeing to this commission, the other legislative leaders for backing it, and Chairman Gerry Parsky and all the members who are pitching in to help the people of California in this unprecedented time – a time when our state needs all the help we can get.
