Legislature Passes Resolution Making January 13th Korean American Day |
|
| SACRAMENTO - Members of the Korean American community joined the California State Legislators Monday in a floor ceremony to celebrate Korean American history. The Assembly passed House Resolution No. 38, proclaiming January 13th of every year as Korean American Day. The resolution, which was authored by the Asian Pacific Islander members of the Assembly and co-authored by all 80 Assembly Members, commemorates the 100-year anniversary of Korean immigration to the U.S. and the invaluable contributions of Korean Americans to the state's cultural diversity, economic strength and proud heritage.
"This will be an annual occasion to celebrate the lives, history and accomplishments of Korean Americans in the United States, and acknowledge the many ways in which they have helped to build and enhance American culture," said Assemblymember Carol Liu, co-chair of the Asian Pacific Islander Legislative Caucus. "I am pleased to have the opportunity to be a part of this very special, historical event." The first Korean immigrants arrived in the U.S. on January 13, 1903. Like many other immigrants, these 102 men, women and children faced language, cultural and economic barriers. Since that time, the Korean American community has blossomed to a population of nearly two million. "Today we are recognizing the important ways that the Korean American community has contributed to the betterment of California. From judges and elected officials to athletes and performers, Korean Americans have strengthened and enriched all of us," said Assemblymember Wilma Chan, co-chair of the Asian Pacific Islander Legislative Caucus. Liu presented the resolution to members of the Centennial Committee of Korean Immigration to the U.S., who had flown from Los Angeles for the event. Also in attendance were members of the Sacramento Korean American Coalition, the Korean American Community Association of Greater Sacramento, the Korean School of Sacramento, and the Korean American Adoptee Network. |
