QUOTABLE DEMS

"We are going to not only write a new chapter in California history, but I've been told we're going to write a new chapter in American history by electing the first African-American woman in the history of this nation to be the Speaker of a state legislative body."

- Speaker Fabian Núñez commenting on the election of Los Angeles Democrat Karen Bass as the 67th Speaker California State Assembly.

CALIFORNIA STATE ASSEMBLY - DEMOCRATIC CAUCUS
Your Budget! Your Values! Take Action!
California State Assembly Democrats want to hear from YOU! Join the conversation about YOUR state budget. California is facing a financial crisis and Assembly Democrats want your help to shape a responsible budget. The Governor and Legislative Republicans have taken a cuts-only approach that will slash your budget without prioritization. Democrats are committed to fight for a fair budget that represents your values. Take action today to insure YOUR priorities are reflected in California's spending plan.
Núñez Introduces Comprehensive Redistricting/Term Limits/Contribution Ban Proposal
“It’s time for real reform to make the legislature more efficient and effective,” said Speaker Núñez. “This proposal is workable, has bipartisan support, and will ensure that our Legislature continues to be diverse and represent all Californians.”
Bold Leadership Needed to Create 21st Century Jobs
We have to position ourselves to compete globally for the high-paid, highly specialized jobs in these new fields. Germany and Japan have already usurped California's once leading position in solar and wind energy through targeted policies and initiatives. And Connecticut, Massachusetts, Texas, New Mexico, New York, New Jersey, Florida, and Pennsylvania all have proactive economic policies.
Making Solar Pay for Homeowners, Farms and Businesses
AB 1920 will allow residents who produce renewable energy for their homes, small businesses or farms to get paid by their utility company for any excess electricity they produce that goes back on the grid and it provides utilities with Renewable Portfolio Standard (RPS) credits for purchasing the renewable energy from their customers.
"Larry's Law": Fostering Safe and Hate Free Schools
Assemblymember Eng nicknamed Assembly Bill 2762 “Larry’s Law” in memory of 14-year-old Larry King of Oxnard, a gay 8th grader, who was murdered in his classroom by his classmate. Police believe it was a hate crime.
Voluntary Recalls of Consumer Products Not Enough
Assembly Bill 1860, the Product Recall Safety and Protection Act, requires immediate removal of recalled toys and other products from the market; prohibits the sale of recalled toys and other recalled consumer products, and imposes stiff fines against those who sell recalled products to prevent the items from surfacing on the Internet or at second-hand stores.
"Geek Squad/Peek Squad" Legislation
Current law already requires teachers, firefighters, doctors and others to report child abuse when they suspect as much during the course of their employment. However, commercial computer technicians are not required to report suspicions of child abuse and pornography under the Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act (CANRA).
