Keep Children Safe:
Pool Safety Tips

In California, drowning is the No. 1 cause of death for children. As a parent, I know firsthand the challenges parents face every day in trying to keep their children safe and healthy. Here are a few tips:
- Never leave children alone in or near a pool.
- Enroll children in swimming classes.
- Completely enclose private pools with a fence that is at least five feet high and is impossible to climb.
- Keep basic lifesaving equipment nearby.
- Learn lifesaving first aid and CPR.
- Post phone numbers of the police, fire department, and hospital nearby.
- Teach children to dial 911 in an emergency.
- Never leave floating objects in the pool that attract children.
- Do not allow running on pool decks.
For more information on pool safety please visit the American Red Cross website on swimming pool safety.

Assemblymember Nava's Oil and Gas Legislation Tells Congress to Back Off on Attempt to Re-Open Our Coast to Offshore Drilling. Closes Oil and Gas Lease Loopholes
SACRAMENTO - On the same day Congress approved draconian legislation that would shred the existing oil and gas lease moratorium that has protected America's coastlines, beaches and coastal economies for the past 25 years, Assemblymember Nava’s AJR 55 passed out of the Assembly Natural Resources Committee. “AJR 55 reiterates the California Legislature’s strong and continued opposition to any Congressional legislation or proposal that would open California’s coast to offshore oil and drilling,” Nava stated. The Congressional legislation that Assemblymember Nava’s bill states opposition to is HR 4761 by Representative Bobby Jindal (LA-01).
Companion legislation that would close the loopholes that oil and gas companies use year after year requires oil and gas companies to file updated leases with updated environmental protection information. Assemblymember Nava’s AB 2972 recently passed the Senate Natural Resources Committee and is awaiting a hearing on the Senate floor.

To help ensure that our state’s military personnel receive the services, health care, and benefits they are entitled to receive, Assemblymember Nava introduced AB 2750, which establishes a California Veteran and National Guard Benefit Commission. The Commission would quickly study the critical issues facing California’s military personnel and their families and then advise the Legislature and the Governor on actions needed to support the California’s military personnel.
Assemblymember Nava wants to make sure all veterans receive their entitled benefits for their service and sacrifice. In light of this, he will be co-sponsoring a Veterans Health and Resource Fair with the VA Steering Committee of Ventura County and the ProCare Foundation, on Saturday, August 12 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. to be held at 1700 N. Lombard Street, Oxnard, CA 93030. For more information please call the Ventura County District Office at (805) 483-9808.

BUDGET UPDATE
For the first time since 2000, the Legislature passed, and the Governor signed, a budget before the Constitutional Deadline. The 2006-07 budget reflects substantially higher than anticipated revenues. Some highlights are:
- Local schools will get all the resources the law says they deserve. University and state college students and their parents won’t have to pay higher tuition bills.
- Community college students will have their fees slashed by 25 percent, opening the door of opportunity to thousands.
- State parks will get more than $250 million for overdue maintenance so our families can continue to enjoy them.
- The disabled and elderly won’t see their benefits cut again.
- This year we are making the largest investment in foster care services that will help these children get a better start in life.
The budget also includes funding to tutor students in grades 7-12 for the California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE). This funding will support provisions of Nava’s Assembly Bill 2163. “This support is critical for our students as they work toward their graduation day,” said Nava. “I am so pleased that the Legislature has committed resources to supporting the most important investment in our future, our students.”
