Laird Releases 07-08 Budget Act Assembly Floor Report

Responsible Budget Fully Funds K-12 Education, Creates Larger Reserve and Blocks Governor's Most Draconian Cuts

SACRAMENTO – Assemblymember John Laird (D-Santa Cruz) today released the 2007-2008 Budget Act Assembly Floor Report.  Release of the report follows the Assembly’s all-night session that resulted in approval of the State Budget Act this morning just after 4 a.m., by a 56-23 vote. 

The budget approved by the Assembly:

  • Creates a $3.4 billion dollar reserve, 62% larger than the Governor's proposed May Revision
  • Transfers $1.257 billion of gas taxes to the general fund
  • Repays $2.5 billion in bond obligations, $1 billion more than required
  • Preserves the Williamson Act
  • Rejects cuts to CalWORKS proposed by the Governor
  • Fully funds aid to Medi-Cal and the homeless mentally ill
  • Fully funds K-12 education
